The Silent SEO Killer is Doing Nothing

The visibility of your website on the internet can make or break your online presence. Sometimes there’s a misconception that once your website is live, then there’s nothing left to do. Just watch the customers roll in, right? Thus you’ve unleashed the SEO Killer!

Which Action is a Bad SEO Practice - It’s Non-Action

This couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, inaction is one of the most detrimental practices in SEO. It’s easy to make excuses for most anything and not performing search engine optimization on your website is a real easy one.

Trust me, I can be just as guilty of this. You get busy on another project and before you know it, a couple of weeks or even months have gone by and I’ve done nothing on my own website. But there are consequences.

The Consequences of SEO Inaction

Nothing is static in the digital world. Search engines like Google are constantly changing their algorithm and the way they rank pages, thus changing who is at the top of the page.

Failing to make adjustments for these changes can lead to a significant drop in website rankings, visibility, and conversions. This is not just about numbers; it translates to reduced traffic, fewer leads, and ultimately, a decrease in revenue.

Common Areas of SEO Neglect to Fix

Deciding to press the do it later or the do it now button.

Keyword Research and Optimization

Keywords are essential to the content on your web pages. They connect your business with what people are searching for.

Without ongoing keyword research, you could end up using terms that are no longer popular or relevant. You could also spend a lot of time writing content for a keyword that you have no chance of ranking for.

Content Creation and Optimization

Search engines favor websites that consistently update their content, keeping it fresh and relevant. I’ve seen firsthand a website’s visibility go up when good, new content is being added and, conversely, the opposite when the content stops and becomes outdated.

Some people visit a website many times before they become a customer. They might go back and forth between yours and your competition’s website. Posting regular content will give users the reason to keep coming back.

Mobile Optimization

With most of the world browsing the internet on the mobile phones, ignoring your website’s mobile optimization would be a serious neglect to your users. Google even prioritizes your mobile view when indexing it.

Technical SEO

Neglecting technical SEO could cause html problems anywhere from your site not displaying correctly when it loads to search engines not being able to index it.

A very thorough technical crawl and audit should be performed on a regular basis to fix these problems. This will also be a great boon for user experience.

Link Building

Link building is the process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own. When other websites link to yours, it is a vote of confidence in your credibility and authority.

Leaving this component out of your SEO plan could cause your website to suffer from:

  • Decreased Search Engine Rankings

  • Reduced Organic Traffic

  • Lost Competitive Edge

  • Decreased Website Authority and Credibility

  • Lower Visibility

  • Missed Opportunities for Brand Building and Networking

Updating Linked Social Media Accounts

Updating your business's social media accounts is crucial in order to maintain a strong online presence and engage with your audience effectively. By regularly posting fresh content, you can keep your followers informed about your latest products, services, and promotions. This can help drive traffic to your website and ultimately increase sales.

Updating your social media accounts shows that your business is active and responsive, which can build trust and credibility with potential customers. It also provides an opportunity to interact with your audience, answer their questions, and address any concerns they may have.

It also signals search engines you are active in keeping your content fresh and keeping your customers informed. This, in turn, leads to increased visibility in the SERPs (search engine results pages).

Checking Analytics

Without checking your website’s analytics, you won’t know if your plan of attack is working. Trust me that lack of insights could equal a lot of money spent on zero results. Make sure you have Google Search Console and Google Analytics set up for your website. There are also many products that can help you make sense of all those numbers and.

Personally, one of the greatest benefits I’ve gotten from checking a website’s analytics often is that I see patterns of which tasks move the SEO needle the most. Then I know which ones I need to prioritize.

Keeping the Wheels Turning With an Action Plan

A written plan for a website's SEO.

So we’ve established the benefits of regular SEO but also acknowledged that for most people, this is not easy. What’s the solution? Two words: Action Plan.

Here’s the roadmap that I use for search engine optimization. It’s a weekly plan that includes one task in each of the major categories.

Each week, I perform:

  • Keyword research to find one that helps fill in any gaps in my content

  • Using that keyword, I write a new page or blog post

  • Make sure the new page or post is mobile optimized

  • Fix one technical error from the most recent audit

  • Send out one backlink outreach

  • Create one social media post
  • Analyze the metrics to see if the plan is working

You can adjust the frequency of how often or how many of these tasks you can handle. The important thing is to stick to it to see results!
